Dialysis at Fortis: Types, Process and What to Expect

How dialysis steps in for failing kidneys, the difference between the two main types, and what day-to-day life looks like.

Last updated: 24/9/2026

Dialysis does some of the work of failing kidneys — removing waste, salt and extra water from the blood. It is typically needed when kidney function drops below about 15%.

Two ways to dialyse

  • ✓Hemodialysis — blood is cleaned by a machine, usually at a centre 2–3 times a week
  • ✓Peritoneal dialysis — cleaning happens inside the body using the abdomen, often done at home

A typical week

Most people on hemodialysis attend three sessions a week of about four hours each. Between sessions, diet limits salt, potassium, phosphorus and fluid.

Dialysis is a bridge, not the end

Many people on dialysis are later evaluated for transplant, which can offer a fuller quality of life. The right choice depends on your health, lifestyle and home situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can someone live on dialysis?

Many people live for years on dialysis with good control of blood pressure, anaemia and diet. Transplant remains the best long-term option.

Can I keep working during dialysis?

Often yes. Home dialysis and evening sessions can help keep a normal work routine.
