How much to drink when kidneys are failing, and how to manage thirst.

When kidneys fail they cannot remove extra fluid, which builds up as swelling and breathlessness. Your doctor may set a daily fluid limit.
How much
For many on dialysis, the limit is around 1–1.5 litres a day, including water in food. Follow your team's advice.
Managing thirst
- ✓Rinse and spit water if very thirsty
- ✓Suck on ice chips (counted in your limit)
- ✓Limit salt, which increases thirst
