What Is GFR and Why It Matters for Your Kidneys

A plain explanation of glomerular filtration rate and what your number reveals about kidney health.

Last updated: 24/9/2026

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best single measure of how well your kidneys filter blood. It estimates how much blood the kidneys clean every minute.

How it is measured

GFR is usually estimated (eGFR) from a blood creatinine test plus your age and sex — no separate procedure needed.

What the number means

A normal GFR is roughly 90 or above. Below 60 for three months or more usually signals chronic kidney disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GFR means kidney failure?

Below 15 indicates kidney failure, when dialysis or transplant is usually considered.
